How to do a Comprehensive and Worthwhile Oral-Facial Examination

This course pulls together the "what you look for," the "why you look for it," and the "how to relate the results in therapy." You will learn:

• Step-by-step oral-facial analytical procedures,
• The rationale behind each procedure, and
• How to integrate and interpret the findings into remedial needs.

• Specifically learn how to analyze:
• Hard Tissue: craniofacial growth, dentition, hard palate
• Respiration and oral resting postures
• Soft Tissue: lips, tongue, tonsils, adenoids, lingual frenum
• Oral tactile sensation and proprioception
• Stabilization and differentiation capacity: head, jaw, lips, tongue
• Oral Habits: thumb and tongue sucking, pacifier use
• Chewing and swallowing

Getting Your Oral-Motor Started

Perhaps you've heard the virtues of "oral-motor" therapy, but are not sure how to get started. This course will help you get your oral-motor going and generating client success.

Learn the basis of oral sensory-motor analysis and therapy and the six fundamental principles of the oral sensory-motor system:

• The Developmental Spectrum
• Oral Tactile Sensation and Proprioception
• Oral Resting Postures, and Oral Hard/Soft Tissue Influences
• Oral-Facial Neuromusculature

R-R-Remediating "R": From Capability to Carryover

Most children who distort "R" form the sound with puckered lips and a depressed, relaxed tongue. Learn therapy to counteract these characteristics. In this 3-hour course, you will discover little known "R" facts critical to complete and timely remediation that goes beyond traditional therapy tasks.

You will learn to do helpful analysis and therapy procedures. Learn:

• The critical components of the back-up and retroflex /r/'s.
• How to analyze your client's distorted (or non-existent) "R" and determine causal factors.
• How to do and sequence specific oral sensory-motor exercises to build oral capability for "R".
• How to do the "Oral-Motor Matrix".
• How to effectively solidify the new "R" production, and achieve conversational carryover.

Remediating Frontal and Lateral "S" and Other Front-Tongue Sounds

They are sometimes called "simple" articulation errors. However, omitted, frontal, lateral, or nasal sibilants are rarely "simple" sounds to correct. And what do you do when the /s/ sounds okay, but it "looks awkward" and doesn't generalize? The answers are provided in this course!

Delve into why, for example, an /s/ is lateralized or produced interdentally. Learn useful information that goes beyond the "sound of the sound" and into the physiological realm of speech production.

You will learn:

• How to analyze sibilant sound substitutions and distortions and determine specific therapy needs.
• How to do and sequence exercises, via the "Oral-Motor Matrix".
• Several techniques for stimming a good /s/, and
• How to effectively solidify the new /s/ and other front-tongue sounds as well as conversational carryover.

Oral Sensory-Motor Therapy for the 2 to 5 Year Old Child

Learn to do oral experimentation techniques via "mouthing" interaction - both you and the child have a mouthing tool-toy! Facilitate oral awareness, sensory-motor differentiation, and speech sound development. Mouthing therapy is fun, beneficial, and appropriate to share with parents.

In addition, you will learn:

• About the "Three T's": Texture, Taste, and Temperature, and how to maximize their use in therapy.
• About the essential relationship of sensation and speech.
• How to balance intra-oral sensitivity, and dissolve tactile defensive walls that inhibits oral awareness and movement.

The Secrets of Achieving Good Oral Resting Postures

Ever have a child that sounds okay in words, but you can't understand a word in conversation? Oral resting postures may be the missing element! Oral resting postures help facilitate oral placement for speech production and is crucial in carryover.

Even if you have never addressed oral resting postures in therapy, this course covers everything you need to know - and why - to successfully shape and habituate the jaw, lips and tongue at rest.

• The desirable postures of the jaw, lips, and tongue.
